Google Calendar now has a built-in dark mode on the web, so you no longer need an extension just to switch from a light background. Open Google Calendar, select the Settings icon, choose Appearance, and then select Dark.
You can also choose Device default if you want Calendar to follow your computer’s light or dark setting. If you want more control over brightness, contrast, colors or scheduling, Night Eye can customize the web version beyond Google’s built-in theme.

How to enable Google Calendar dark mode on desktop
Google Calendar’s web app includes native Light, Dark and Device default options. Google introduced these choices with its refreshed Calendar interface, as described in the official Google Calendar dark-mode announcement.
- Open Google Calendar on your computer.
- At the top right, select the Settings gear.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose Dark.
- Select Done to apply the change.
Light, Dark and Device default
- Light keeps the standard bright Calendar interface.
- Dark keeps Calendar in its built-in dark theme.
- Device default lets Calendar follow your computer’s current light or dark appearance.
How to turn off dark mode on Google Calendar
Open Settings → Appearance, choose Light, and select Done. If a browser extension is also changing Calendar’s appearance, set that extension to its normal mode for Calendar or temporarily disable it before testing the built-in setting.
How to enable Google Calendar dark mode on Android
Google Calendar has an in-app theme control on Android 7 and later. Google’s current Android instructions use these menu names:
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Theme.
- Select Dark.
Choose Light to turn dark mode off, or use the system-default option when you want the app to match your device. On Android 10 and later, the Calendar widget and notifications can follow the system Dark theme or Battery Saver setting. Google notes that Calendar widgets remain light on Android 9 and earlier.
How to enable Google Calendar dark mode on iPhone and iPad
The Google Calendar app does not currently provide a separate theme switch on iPhone or iPad. According to Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions, the app follows the device appearance on iOS 13 and later.
- Open the iPhone or iPad Settings app.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Select Dark.
- Open Google Calendar. It should now use the dark appearance.
To return Calendar to a light background, choose Light in the same device settings. If you enable Automatic, the device—and Google Calendar—can change between light and dark according to your selected schedule.
Google Calendar’s built-in dark mode versus Night Eye
Google’s native theme is the simplest choice when you only want Calendar to switch between light and dark. Night Eye is useful when you want finer display controls, scheduled changes or consistent dark mode across other supported websites.
| Capability | Google’s built-in mode | Night Eye |
|---|---|---|
| Basic light/dark switching | Yes | Yes |
| Follow the device or system theme | Yes | Yes, through OS/browser integration |
| Schedule dark mode | No dedicated Calendar schedule | Yes |
| Custom brightness, contrast, dimming and warmth | No | Yes |
| Different settings for specific websites or pages | No | Yes |
| Apply dark mode across other supported websites | No | Yes |
| Browser extension required | No | Yes |
Night Eye changes how Calendar is rendered in your browser. Page analysis and color conversion happen locally on your device; browsing history and page content are not sent to Night Eye as part of that conversion.
Want more control than Google’s built-in theme?
Use Night Eye when you want to tune Calendar’s brightness and contrast, follow a schedule, or use the same dark-mode controls on other websites.
Google Calendar dark-mode color customization
Google’s dark mode changes the Calendar interface, while calendar and event colors remain separate. This distinction matters when an event color looks clear in the light theme but loses contrast against the dark interface.
- You can still assign colors to individual calendars and events.
- Google’s global Modern and Classic event color-set control is available only when the background is set to Light.
- Night Eye adjusts the page rendering on your device. It does not rewrite the event colors stored in Google Calendar or change what collaborators see.
- Avoid very dark event colors when they make event titles or time labels difficult to read.
If you use several Google services, see the Google dark mode guide for the current native and browser-based options.
Is dark mode better for Google Calendar?
A dark interface can feel more comfortable in a dim room because it reduces the amount of bright background on screen. The result depends on your display, room lighting and personal preference, so treat dark mode as an appearance choice rather than a medical solution. Keep the screen brightness appropriate for your surroundings and use event colors with readable contrast.
Google Calendar dark mode troubleshooting
The Appearance option is missing
Make sure you are using the full Calendar website at calendar.google.com, not a small Calendar panel inside another app. Refresh the page, update the browser and test in a private window. Google states that the web theme is available to personal accounts and Google Workspace users and has no administrator control.
Calendar stays light after you select Dark
Select Done, then refresh Calendar. If it remains light, choose Light, save the change, and switch back to Dark. Also check whether a browser extension, custom stylesheet or accessibility setting is overriding the page colors.
Device default does not follow the system
Confirm that your computer is actually set to Dark appearance, then refresh Calendar. A browser profile theme, an extension or a stale Calendar tab can prevent the change from appearing immediately.
A side panel or embedded calendar remains light
An embedded Google Calendar is a separate web surface and may not inherit the theme selected in your main Calendar account. Third-party side panels and isolated embedded content can also keep their own appearance. Their owner may need to provide a separate dark theme.
Dark-mode extensions conflict with Google Calendar
Two dark-mode systems can process the same page and produce unexpected colors. If you want Google’s native theme, put Calendar in Normal mode in Night Eye or disable other appearance extensions for that site. If you prefer Night Eye’s controls, set Google Calendar to Light first and let Night Eye handle the page. For unresolved rendering problems, use the Night Eye help center.
How to return Google Calendar to light mode
On the web, select Settings → Appearance → Light → Done. On Android, open Menu → Settings → General → Theme → Light. On iPhone or iPad, change the device appearance to Light under Settings → Display & Brightness.
