Updated August 2026.
Salesforce dark mode is now available, but not everywhere.
Eligible organizations using Salesforce Lightning Design System 2 (SLDS 2) can activate native dark mode in beta. An administrator enables the option for the organization, and each user can then choose Dark, Light, or System from the profile menu.
If you do not see Color Mode, you may not have missed a hidden setting. Your organization may still use SLDS 1, your administrator may not have enabled dark mode, or the Salesforce product you are viewing may not support it.
Night Eye remains useful in those situations because it changes Salesforce's appearance locally in your browser. It does not change your organization's Salesforce theme for colleagues or other users.
Quick answer: Salesforce now offers native dark mode in beta for eligible organizations using SLDS 2. Your Salesforce administrator must activate it before you can select Dark from your profile menu. If the setting is unavailable, or an unsupported Salesforce area remains light, Night Eye can apply dark mode at the browser level.
Which Salesforce dark mode method should you use?
| Situation | Native dark mode? | Best method |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible Salesforce organization using SLDS 2 | Yes, in beta | Ask an administrator to activate it |
| User in an enabled organization | Yes | Profile image → Color Mode → Dark |
| Organization using SLDS 1 | No SLDS 2 dark mode | Transition to SLDS 2 or use Night Eye |
| Salesforce Setup | Not currently supported | Use Night Eye |
| Unsupported Salesforce product or area | May remain light | Use Night Eye |
| Salesforce Classic | No SLDS 2 dark mode | Use Night Eye |
| Managed work browser | Depends on company policy | Ask IT to enable Night Eye |
Salesforce dark mode is an organization-level capability before it becomes a user preference. If Color Mode is missing from your profile, your administrator may not have enabled it, your organization may not use SLDS 2, or the current Salesforce area may not support dark mode.

Does Salesforce have dark mode?
Yes. Salesforce provides native dark mode in beta for supported SLDS 2 organizations and products. It is not a full-platform setting, and an administrator must activate it before individual users can select it.
It helps to separate three different controls:
- Native Salesforce dark mode: An SLDS 2 capability controlled at the organization level.
- User Color Mode: The Light, Dark, or System preference available to each user after activation.
- Browser extension dark mode: A local visual conversion that Night Eye can apply when native mode is unavailable or incomplete.
Salesforce says dark mode is available in Free Suite, Starter Suite, Pro Suite, Professional, Enterprise, and Developer edition organizations as of Winter '26. The rollout is still product- and organization-dependent, so check the current Salesforce Cosmos and SLDS 2 availability page before making a rollout decision.
Check whether your Salesforce organization supports dark mode
Before looking for the switch, confirm that your Salesforce environment is eligible:
- Check that the organization uses Salesforce Lightning Experience.
- Check that it uses an SLDS 2 theme, such as Salesforce Cosmos.
- Ask whether an administrator has enabled dark mode for users.
- Confirm that the Salesforce app you are viewing supports SLDS 2.
- If you need a browser extension, check your organization's extension policy.
Salesforce Classic does not use the SLDS 2 native dark-mode system. If your organization still uses Classic, Night Eye is a browser-level option only when your IT policy permits it.
How administrators enable native Salesforce dark mode
Salesforce dark mode must first be activated by an administrator with the required permissions. Salesforce's current instructions use this path:
- Select the Setup icon.
- Select Open Advanced Setup.
- In Quick Find, search for and select Themes and Branding.
- From the Salesforce Cosmos menu, select Edit.
- In the Dark Mode section, select Let users enable dark mode.
- Select Save.
- Select Activate.
- Select Activate again to confirm.
An administrator can select Preview before activation and check supported apps outside Setup. Salesforce Setup itself remains light.
Interface labels and availability may change as Salesforce expands SLDS 2. Use the current Salesforce dark mode guide as the source of truth.
How users turn Salesforce dark mode on
After an administrator activates the option:
- Refresh Salesforce.
- Select your profile image.
- Find Color Mode.
- Select Dark.
Select Light to return to the light interface. Select System to follow the operating system preference where supported.
Why is the Salesforce Color Mode option missing?
If Color Mode does not appear in your profile menu, one of these conditions is usually responsible:
- Your organization still uses SLDS 1.
- An administrator has not enabled dark mode.
- The selected theme is not compatible with SLDS 2 dark mode.
- The Salesforce app you are viewing does not support SLDS 2.
- You are viewing Setup, which does not support native dark mode.
- Your organization uses Salesforce Classic.
- The rollout has not reached the relevant Salesforce product or environment.
- You are using a Trailhead Playground, where Salesforce says dark mode is unavailable.
Ordinary users cannot activate an organization-level feature. Ask your Salesforce administrator whether SLDS 2 and dark mode are enabled before spending time searching for the control.
Where native Salesforce dark mode does not work
Salesforce currently lists these areas as unsupported:
- Setup
- Agentforce Commerce
- Generative Canvas
- For You apps
Other unsupported areas can also remain light when dark mode is enabled. Custom Lightning components, Visualforce pages, embedded apps, dashboards, and third-party packages may need separate testing.
Check Salesforce's current SLDS 2 availability information because coverage can change with seasonal releases.
How to use Night Eye for Salesforce dark mode
Night Eye is a practical alternative when native Salesforce dark mode is unavailable or leaves an unsupported area light. It changes the page only in your browser; it does not activate Salesforce's SLDS 2 setting or affect other users.
- Open the Night Eye download page and choose your browser.
- Install Night Eye from the official browser store.
- Open Salesforce, or reload the tab if Salesforce was already open.
- Check that the controls, tables, dashboards, forms, and custom components you use remain readable.
- Open Night Eye if you need to adjust the appearance or return the page to Normal mode.
Important for work accounts: Salesforce may contain sensitive customer and business information. If your browser is managed by your employer, install only extensions approved by your IT or security team.
Salesforce dark mode in Chrome
- Install Night Eye from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open Chrome's Extensions menu.
- Pin Night Eye if its icon is hidden.
- Open or reload Salesforce.
- Test the pages and custom components required for your work.
Salesforce dark mode in Edge, Firefox, and Safari
The same browser-level method is available for other supported browsers. Install Night Eye only if your organization's policy permits it, then open or reload Salesforce and test your essential pages.
If a critical element becomes difficult to read, return Salesforce to its original appearance and report the affected page through Night Eye support.
Native Salesforce dark mode versus Night Eye
| Factor | Native Salesforce dark mode | Night Eye |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | An administrator enables it for the organization | A user installs a browser extension |
| Availability | Eligible SLDS 2 organizations and products | Supported browsers and permitted environments |
| Salesforce Setup | Not currently supported | May be converted at the browser level |
| Salesforce Classic | Not part of SLDS 2 dark mode | Browser-level alternative |
| Effect on other users | Each user chooses a color mode after activation | Local to the user's browser |
| Approval | Admin activation is required first | IT or security approval may be required |
| Custom components | Must be tested | Must also be tested |
| Status | Native feature in beta | Independent browser extension |
Neither method guarantees perfect coverage of every custom Salesforce surface. Test the pages, components, dashboards, and packages your team relies on before a wider rollout.
How to turn Salesforce dark mode off
Turn off native Salesforce dark mode
- Select your profile image.
- Find Color Mode.
- Select Light, or select System to follow your operating system preference.
Turn off Night Eye for Salesforce
- Open Night Eye.
- Select Normal mode for Salesforce.
- Reload the page if necessary.
Administrators can disable the organization-level option or change the active theme, but that affects availability across the organization. It is different from one user selecting Light.
Salesforce dark mode troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Color Mode is missing | Confirm that the organization and current app use SLDS 2, that an administrator enabled dark mode, and that you are not in Setup, Classic, or a Trailhead Playground. |
| Themes and Branding has no dark-mode option | Check your permissions, the active theme, your edition, and the latest SLDS 2 availability information. |
| Salesforce Cosmos cannot be edited | Ask an administrator to confirm permissions and whether dark mode is available in that environment. Do not assume every organization has the same controls yet. |
| Dark mode works in one app but not another | The second app may not support SLDS 2. Unsupported areas remain light. |
| Setup remains light | This is expected. Salesforce currently excludes Setup from native dark mode. |
| A custom component or Visualforce page remains light | Test it separately. Use Night Eye if permitted, or return to the original appearance if readability is affected. |
| A dashboard, chart, or embedded package has poor contrast | Switch to Light or Normal mode for the task and report the exact component without exposing confidential data. |
| Night Eye is installed but Salesforce remains light | Reload Salesforce, open Night Eye, confirm Dark mode is selected, and check whether the extension has access to the site. |
| The Night Eye icon is missing | Open the browser's Extensions menu and pin Night Eye to the toolbar. |
| The page flashes white while loading | Reload and retest. If the flash persists, report the page type, browser, and Night Eye version to support. |
| It works in one browser but not another | Compare browser and extension versions, site permissions, and employer policies. |
| Company policy blocks extensions | Do not work around the restriction. Ask IT whether an approved browser-level option is available. |
| Other users do not see the same dark appearance | Night Eye is local to your browser. Native Color Mode is also a per-user choice after an administrator enables it. |
When reporting a Night Eye conversion issue, include the affected Salesforce page type, your browser, the Night Eye version, and whether the problem affects a standard or custom component. A screenshot can help, but remove customer records, account data, private dashboards, credentials, and other confidential information first.
