AniList Dark Mode: How to Enable It and Customize Your Theme

AniList already has a built-in dark theme. You do not need a browser extension just to make AniList dark. Scroll to the bottom of the website, find Site Theme in the footer, and choose Dark. There are four theme choices, including an option that follows your device's color scheme.

If you like AniList's dark theme but want more control over brightness, contrast, saturation, screen dimming or warmer colors, Night Eye adds those customization options in supported browsers.

AniList dark mode on desktop, iPhone and Android

DeviceHow to enable or customize AniList dark mode
Desktop (Windows, Mac or Linux)Open AniList in your browser, scroll to the footer and select Dark under Site Theme. For more customization, use Night Eye on a supported desktop browser.
iPhone / iPad (iOS)Open AniList in Safari, go to the footer and select Dark, or System to follow your device theme. For additional browser-based controls, Night Eye is available as a Safari extension for iPhone and iPad.
AndroidOpen AniList in your mobile browser and choose Dark from the footer. For further customization, Night Eye is supported in compatible Android browsers including Firefox, Edge and Yandex.

These instructions apply to the AniList website. Third-party AniList apps may have their own appearance settings.

How to turn on AniList's built-in dark mode

  1. Visit anilist.co in your browser.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  3. Find Site Theme in the footer.
  4. Select the Dark theme preview to switch to AniList's native dark appearance.

That's all you need for a standard dark theme. You can return to the footer any time to select a different appearance. No installation or subscription is required for AniList's own theme controls.

What are AniList's four site themes?

The Site Theme selector in AniList's footer offers four options:

  • Default: AniList's standard light appearance.
  • Dark: AniList's built-in dark appearance, with darker page surfaces and lighter text.
  • Contrast: An alternative higher-contrast appearance.
  • System: Uses your browser or operating system's light/dark color preference where supported.

If you simply want dark backgrounds while browsing anime, manga, lists and discussions, start with Dark. If you want AniList to follow your device theme automatically, try System. These are AniList features, not Night Eye features.

When should you use Night Eye instead?

AniList's built-in themes are a convenient starting point, but they are preset appearances. Night Eye is useful if you want to fine-tune how AniList looks on your own screen rather than choose only among the four presets.

  • Brightness and contrast: Adjust how light or dark the page appears and how strongly text stands out.
  • Saturation: Change the intensity of website colors to suit your preferences.
  • Dimming and blue-light filter: Make the page less bright or shift it toward warmer tones, especially in low-light surroundings.
  • Website-specific settings: Customize AniList independently of other websites.
  • Scheduling and system integration: Set dark mode to change at certain times or follow supported device color-scheme preferences.

For most people, AniList's native Dark theme is enough. Night Eye is an optional way to make the browsing experience more adjustable. Dark mode is a display preference, not a guaranteed remedy for eye strain.

How to customize AniList dark mode with Night Eye

  1. Install Night Eye for your browser. It supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and other compatible browsers.
  2. Open AniList. Refresh the page if the extension was installed while AniList was already open.
  3. For Night Eye's own dark conversion, start with AniList's Default theme so two separate dark themes do not interfere with each other.
  4. Open the Night Eye extension and select Dark mode.
  5. Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, dimming or blue-light filtering until the page suits your display and surroundings.

You can also use Night Eye's Normal mode if you prefer to keep AniList's original appearance. If the page looks unusual, check both AniList's Site Theme setting and Night Eye's selected mode. Browser extensions and website themes can sometimes interact, so the result may differ across browsers or after website updates.
