A brightly lit browser can feel out of place when you prefer a darker screen. A browser with dark mode lets you switch the interface from a light background to a darker color scheme, often with lighter text and controls.
There is one important difference: a dark browser theme does not necessarily make every website dark. Some websites follow your browser or operating system preference, while others keep their own appearance. The options vary between browsers.
Many popular browsers now have a built-in dark theme, including Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, and Safari through your device's appearance settings. You can start with those settings and then use Night Eye when you want to customize how individual websites look.
Night Eye can convert supported pages to dark mode and lets you adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, dimming, and warmer color tones. Even if a website already offers dark mode, you can still fine-tune its appearance to your liking. Here is how the leading browsers handle dark mode, what their settings actually change, and where Night Eye fits in.
Top Browsers With Built-in Dark Mode
All the browsers below offer a dark interface, but their treatment of website content is different. Check the native option first; then decide whether you need more control over individual pages.
Opera dark mode
Opera is a Chromium-based browser with a built-in dark appearance. You can change the browser's tabs, address bar, and other interface elements without installing an extension. Opera also offers themes and interface customization, while Opera GX adds gaming-oriented tools and a separate option for darkening webpages.
To enable dark mode in Opera, open Easy Setup in the top-right corner. Choose the Dark appearance or a theme with a dark interface. The wording and location may vary with the theme and browser version.
Pros
- Built-in light, dark, and theme options make it easy to change the browser interface.
- Opera's themes offer additional colors and visual customization.
- In Opera GX, you can turn on Force Dark Pages from Easy Setup or Settings for websites that do not provide a dark theme.
Cons
- The standard dark appearance does not guarantee that every website will use dark colors.
- Forced page colors may not look right on every site. Night Eye provides additional website-specific adjustments when you prefer a different result.

Vivaldi dark mode
Vivaldi is another Chromium-based browser known for customization and tab management. Its native themes let you change colors and other interface details. You can also schedule theme changes or follow your operating system's appearance.
To enable a dark browser theme, open Settings > Themes and select a dark theme, or create one to match your preferences. For website content, go to Settings > Appearance > Website Appearance and select Dark or Auto. You can also enable Force a dark theme on all websites if you want Vivaldi to attempt a dark appearance on sites without one.
Pros
- Vivaldi offers predefined and custom browser themes with scheduling options.
- Website Appearance offers Light, Dark, and Auto settings, plus an option to force dark colors on websites.
- Its flexible tab management remains useful alongside theme customization.
Cons
- Forced dark colors can produce unexpected results on some pages.
- If you want finer control over brightness, contrast, saturation, or dimming on individual sites, Night Eye offers additional options.
Firefox dark mode
The Firefox browser is well known for its privacy controls and flexible appearance options. Firefox includes a dedicated dark theme, and you can choose a separate color-scheme preference for websites.
To change the browser theme, open the menu, select Add-ons and themes, then Themes, and enable Dark. To change the website color-scheme preference, open Settings > General and find Website appearance under Language and Appearance. Select Dark or your preferred setting.
Pros
- Firefox provides built-in dark themes and additional themes from its add-on library.
- You can set website appearance independently of the browser theme.
- Firefox includes font and color controls for additional appearance adjustments.
Cons
- Selecting a dark website preference does not convert every website. Sites may ignore that preference or use their own theme controls.
- For websites that remain light, Night Eye can apply a dark conversion on supported pages or help customize an existing dark appearance.

Microsoft Edge dark mode
Microsoft Edge has a clean, Chromium-based interface with built-in dark appearance settings, profiles, and tracking prevention. You can enable its dark theme without adding an extension. Many websites also offer their own dark modes, which may respond to your device or browser preference.
To turn on Edge dark mode, open the three-dot menu > Settings > Appearance. Choose Dark under the theme or overall appearance settings. Depending on your Edge version, you may also see the option to follow your system appearance.
Pros
- Native dark appearance is easy to enable from Edge settings.
- Edge supports additional themes and compatible browser extensions.
- On supported articles, Immersive Reader offers its own page appearance controls.
Cons
- Edge's dark interface does not automatically convert every website to dark mode.
- Built-in browser theme settings offer less control over each website's brightness, contrast, and colors than Night Eye.
Dark Mode in Chrome and Safari: What It Changes
Chrome and Safari both support dark appearance, contrary to older guides that describe them as browsers without dark mode. The key limitation is that a dark browser interface does not force every page to use a dark background.
Chrome dark mode
Google Chrome includes a built-in dark theme. It changes the browser's interface, including the toolbar, settings, and some built-in pages. Chrome can also follow your device's appearance settings.
To enable it on a computer, open a New Tab and select Customize Chrome. Under Appearance, choose Dark, Light, or Device. You can also set your computer to dark appearance and let Chrome follow it.
Pros
- Chrome has a native dark theme, with no extension required for the browser interface.
- The Device option can follow your operating system's appearance.
- Chrome supports browser extensions, including Night Eye, for more control over webpages.
Cons
- Chrome's built-in dark theme does not make every website dark. Websites decide how they respond to the chosen appearance.
- For pages that stay bright or for additional customization, install Night Eye from the official setup guide and adjust supported websites individually.
Safari dark mode
Safari supports a dark browser appearance through your Apple device's system settings. On a Mac, choosing a dark appearance changes compatible app interfaces, including Safari. Websites that support a dark color scheme may also respond to this preference, but pages without that support can remain light.
On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance and select Dark or Auto. On iPhone or iPad, select Dark in the device's display and appearance settings. These settings do not force a dark theme onto every website.
If you want dark mode on more websites, Night Eye is available as a Safari extension on Mac and in Safari on iPhone and iPad. After installation, enable the extension and allow the requested website access in Safari's extension settings.
Pros
- Safari can follow the Apple device's Light, Dark, or automatic appearance.
- Compatible websites can display their own native dark themes.
- Night Eye adds page-level controls such as brightness, contrast, saturation, dimming, and warmer tones.
Cons
- System dark appearance alone does not transform websites that have no compatible dark theme.
- Night Eye requires Safari extension permissions to modify supported pages; some browser or website content may remain outside an extension's control.
How to Install Night Eye for Your Browser
Even when your browser already has a dedicated dark theme, Night Eye can help you customize supported websites to your liking. It works on page content rather than replacing the browser's toolbar or operating system theme. You can keep a website's own dark appearance, use Night Eye's dark conversion, or adjust the page with filters.
Installing Night Eye is straightforward:
- Open the Night Eye setup guide and select your supported browser.
- Install Night Eye from that browser's official extension store and approve the necessary permissions.
- Open or refresh a website. Night Eye starts in Dark mode on supported pages; select the extension icon if you want to change the appearance.
- Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, dimming, and warmth where available. You can save settings for the current website or apply them more broadly.
Night Eye supports major desktop browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and supported Chromium-based browsers. On mobile, use Safari on iPhone or iPad, or a compatible Firefox, Edge, or Yandex browser on Android. Extension support varies by platform; for example, Chrome on Android does not support the desktop Chrome extension.
You can also schedule dark mode, follow a supported system appearance setting, and choose which sites should use Dark, Filtered, or Normal mode. All page color conversion is handled locally on your device.

Night Eye Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions
What if Night Eye is not working on my browser?
First, make sure Night Eye is enabled and that you have granted the browser's required website permissions. Refresh any tab that was already open when you installed the extension. Then open Night Eye and check whether that website is set to Dark, Filtered, or Normal. Some browser pages and website elements cannot be modified by extensions.
If a website already has its own dark mode and the colors look unusual, try using only one darkening method at a time. You can also adjust the controls or contact Night Eye through its built-in support option.
How do I continue using Night Eye after my trial ends?
You can choose a paid plan or continue with Night Eye Lite, the free plan that supports up to five websites of your choice in one browser. Open the extension's settings to manage your selected websites. Check the current Night Eye plans for the available options.
How do I use Night Eye with a website that already has dark mode?
Start with the website's own dark setting if you like its appearance. Night Eye can still offer adjustments such as brightness, contrast, and dimming. For a different look, use Night Eye's Dark mode to convert supported pages; use Filtered mode to keep the original colors while adjusting the display; or choose Normal to leave the page unchanged by Night Eye.
On supported websites with native dark themes, Night Eye also offers a separate Deep Integration feature. Its three integration settings are:
- Deep Integration: Night Eye controls that supported website's built-in light or dark preference.
- Night Eye Dark: Night Eye applies its own dark-mode conversion instead of using the website's built-in theme.
- Disabled: Night Eye neither converts the website nor controls its built-in theme through the integration.
These integration settings are different from Night Eye's regular Dark, Filtered, and Normal page modes. Deep Integration does not change the browser's toolbar theme and is available only where Night Eye supports the website's own theme controls. For more details, see the Night Eye Help Center.
Which Dark Mode Setup Should You Choose?
If you only want a dark browser interface, start with the built-in settings in Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Safari. These options are usually the simplest way to change the browser's own appearance.
If your goal is dark websites, check whether the site has its own dark theme. Vivaldi and Opera GX also provide native options for forcing darker webpage colors. If a page remains light, or its existing dark colors are not quite right, Night Eye lets you customize supported websites without changing your preferred browser.
The best result is the one that fits the pages you actually use. Start with the native theme, then adjust individual websites with Night Eye whenever you want more control over the colors, brightness, contrast, or dimming.
Customize Dark Mode on Your Favorite Websites
Not every website offers a built-in dark mode, and built-in themes do not always include the adjustments you want. Install Night Eye to apply and customize dark mode on supported websites, with local color conversion, website-specific settings, and built-in support. Choose Dark, Filtered, or Normal for the appearance that works best for each page.
