twitch dark mode

Twitch has a built-in dark mode, so you do not need an extension to make Twitch dark. On a desktop browser, open the menu in the top-right corner of Twitch and switch on Dark Theme. The Twitch apps for iPhone, iPad and Android also support a dark appearance.

Below are the steps for each device, plus separate instructions for chat, Theater Mode and adjusting Twitch’s existing dark theme with Night Eye.

Twitch dark mode by device

DeviceHow to enable dark mode
On desktop (Windows, Mac or Linux)Open Twitch → click the profile or account icon in the top-right corner → enable Dark Theme. No extension required.
On iPhone or iPad (iOS/iPadOS)Open the Twitch app → Profile → Settings → Preferences → Appearance → Dark Theme. Turn off Match System Theme first if you want to choose manually. Menu labels may vary by app version.
On AndroidOpen the Twitch app → Profile → Settings → Preferences → Appearance → choose Dark Theme. In older versions, use Account Settings → Preferences → Enable Dark Mode.

Twitch includes dark mode on desktop, iPhone, iPad and Android. You do not need Night Eye for the native dark theme; Night Eye is optional if you want more control over its appearance in your browser.

How to turn on Twitch dark mode on desktop

  1. Open twitch.tv in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari or another supported browser.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner. When signed out, look for the person or account icon in the same area.
  3. Find Dark Theme in the menu and switch it on. Twitch changes its interface without requiring an extension.

To return to the light appearance, open the same menu and turn Dark Theme off. If the option is not visible, check whether the menu extends below the browser window; resetting browser zoom to 100% or zooming out slightly may reveal it.

How to enable Twitch dark mode on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Twitch app and go to the Profile tab. In newer mobile layouts, this is in the bottom navigation.
  2. Open Settings or Account Settings, then look for Preferences and Appearance.
  3. Choose the dark appearance. Depending on the app version, the setting may be labeled Dark Theme or Enable Dark Mode.
  4. If you see Match System Theme, you can enable it to follow your iPhone or iPad appearance. Turn it off if you want to select Twitch’s theme independently.

To switch back, select the light theme or turn off the dark-theme toggle in the same area. Twitch has changed its mobile navigation over time, so the exact wording and number of taps can vary between app versions.

How to turn on Twitch dark mode on Android

  1. Open the Twitch Android app and tap Profile.
  2. Open Account Settings, then Preferences.
  3. Turn on Enable Dark Mode. On versions that group theme controls under Appearance, select the dark theme there instead.

To return to light mode, go back to the same setting and disable Dark Mode or select Light. Twitch’s Android help guide documents the Account Settings → Preferences → Enable Dark Mode path. The profile button’s location may differ in newer app layouts.

Twitch dark mode for chat

There is a difference between darkening the whole Twitch website and adjusting chat. The website’s Dark Theme changes the surrounding interface, including the usual chat panel. Chat also has its own controls for readability and layout.

  1. Open a live channel on Twitch and find the chat panel.
  2. Click the gear icon in or near the chat area to open Chat Settings.
  3. Open Chat Appearance to adjust options such as font size, readable username colors and timestamps.
  4. If your version of chat or a pop-out chat window shows a separate dark-theme control, use it there. If not, use Twitch’s site-wide Dark Theme setting.

These chat appearance controls do not change the livestream video itself. See Twitch’s Chat Basics for the available chat settings.

Is Twitch Theater Mode the same as dark mode?

No. Theater Mode changes the viewing layout: it gives the video and chat more room by hiding much of the surrounding page. Twitch’s channel-page guide describes Theater Mode as creating a dark viewing environment. It is not a substitute for choosing your preferred site-wide theme.

To use it, open a stream and select the Theater Mode icon among the video-player controls near the bottom-right corner. Select the icon again to return to the regular channel layout. For a video-only view, use the separate Fullscreen control.

Twitch dark mode not working? Try these checks

Dark Theme option is missing

First check the top-right profile menu rather than your browser’s appearance settings. On a smaller laptop screen, try resetting zoom or zooming out to reveal any menu items cut off at the bottom. On mobile, open the Profile tab and look under Preferences or Appearance; menu labels can change with app updates.

Dark mode is not saving

Reload Twitch and see whether the setting remains selected. If it resets, test a regular browser window rather than private browsing, and check whether site data is being cleared between sessions. Try disabling other theme-changing extensions temporarily to rule out a conflict. In the mobile app, update Twitch and restart it before changing the setting again.

Twitch stays dark when I want light mode

Turn off Dark Theme on desktop, or choose the light appearance in the mobile app. On iPhone and iPad, also check whether Match System Theme is enabled. If you use Night Eye or another appearance extension, switch that extension to Normal for Twitch so the website can display its original theme.

Customize Twitch’s existing dark mode with Night Eye Filtered Mode

Twitch’s native theme is the simplest way to make the site dark. If the result still feels too bright, too dim or too cool in color, Night Eye can help you tune the appearance without replacing Twitch’s design.

  1. Switch on Twitch’s built-in Dark Theme.
  2. Install Night Eye in your desktop browser and open Twitch.
  3. Open the Night Eye extension and choose Filtered Mode for twitch.tv.
  4. Adjust Brightness, Contrast, Warmth or Dim until the page feels comfortable.

Why Filtered Mode? It preserves Twitch’s own dark color scheme rather than converting it a second time. Your adjustments can be kept for Twitch while other websites use their own settings. If a video or chat looks too dark, reduce the filtering or select Normal Mode.

Night Eye is a browser extension, not a theme control for the native Twitch Android or iOS app. It can also provide dark mode on other websites that do not offer one. Learn more in the Night Eye setup guide.
